Middle Eastern influence

I have always had an interest in middle eastern dress and religious iconography since i looked into mens islamic garbs and traditional dress. This is why i am excited by the idea of Veronica Basharatyan's SS12 collection ‘Surreal Hidden Beauty’.

The initial influence came from a trip to Iran in March 2009, where she experienced the true feel of the East with all its beauty and unique traditions hidden underneath everyday routine. The fact that Modern World does not always understand the real essence of Eastern traditions and therefore sometimes describes it as “too strict” and “not normal” result in numerous works by designers and artists, who try to unveil the “Veiled Middle East”.

I particularly love the use of textures and finishes in full length skirts and netted jumpers.

I want to explore the idea of shedding one’s skin, pulling away an abundance of dead layers similar to that of a reptiles’. I want to play with the idea of putting a man into another’s skin. To be wrapped in a membrane, stretched and warped into a functional garment and cut with multiple layers, peeling away and exposing – a garment that is blown out and oversized in comparison to the human skin. In order to manipulate a form and to create a skin within a skin, a body of contrasted forms could be layered and joined to create a Reptile-Human Hybrid. A body conscious garment cut in such a way that forces the male to move with the garment, rather than of his own accord. A piece that is skin-tight and shrunken, whilst simultaneously being stretchable, so that it clings to the flesh. I want to morph oversized scaled and reptilian panels with the male form, to become a garment in its own right.

For so long now i have been in serious discussions with this boy about starting a blog. Although he has been on the flickr bandwagon for quiet some time, i dont think you can provoke a reaction as well without the story and ideas behind a photograph. Michael never speaks highly of his work and is always humbled when it comes to showing people his photographs and so, as i am forever telling him that he needs to put himself out there.
i thought i'd start with this post.

Michael: For too long now I've harboured stories, ideas or inspirations with nowhere to inject them to. Using photography as a method to convey an image in my head comes easy to me. To set an alternative scene comes even more easily to me. They're fleeting moments but they occur to me all the time, every day. I can't go any longer without letting any of it pass by. Therefore I would guess, creativity has always been a huge part of me, or maybe all of me. It's morphed into many different things over the years, but I may have found my cornerstone. If you have somehow happened to stumble across this empty online space, welcome to the beginning. If you decide to come back, I'd be thankful. I need to share my progress with someone.

And so i've not long completed a 3 week internship at Religion clothing. I worked within the menswear team of charlotte wiseman (head of menswear) and Tahsin, this was in preparation for the AW12 season. They spend most of their year out in religions factory in Bali. i was asked to come into their head office for 2 days a week during July/August whilst they were in the UK where i was put to researching a whole lot of different things. This included gothic hawaiian shirts, biblical names, SS12 shows, jersey designs, just to name a few. I even was asked to draw out some designs for a hoodie for the next season, which was great because i love religions style so much. The research was so relevant to me and helped me to focus my own ideas for my signature and design style, looking into that of dark macabre, religion, gothic victorian ideas to again name just a few.

I also had the chance to work with sadie who is the buying, selling and merchandising machine. I got to see an overview of the brand and the whole design-to-customer process. I'd never really thought of all the buying, business and selling of fashion, its always been creative for me and made you realise just how vital it is to fashion business and to fashion itself. I worked with Sadie deciding on which pieces to stock at their new store opening in Australia. This also made me think more about target marketing and for who you are selling to. Australian fashion is so very different to that of London's and therefore had to be thought about very differently. (Think 5 years behind London)

I've learn so much seeing as this placement was very different to others i have completed. The religion team is more of an office-based work environment than a creative team. Yeah you have people occasionally working on mannequin or toiling but the whole atmosphere is more business than art. The majority of the day is spent on PC which i suppose is concurrent with a high street, retail based design team but which showed me just how different an approach to fashion design can be.

What is your inspiration behind your collection?
Fearghal: Growing up in Northern Ireland with communities divided by religions i began to explore the importance of being part of a community. I looked at past-apocalyptic films such as Mad Max, Resident Evil and The Road to look at how film portrayed tribes and communities living in hostile environments. I began with the concepts of wearable architecture and liveable garments. I looked at African tribes and how they've retained historic costumes. Mixing weather proof fabrics with delicate knitwear and chiffon I was exploring the idea that humans are fragile creatures that need protecting from elements and each other.

Now i love Fearghal's work. i was so disapointed that i didn't get to work with him on his graduate collection. He's got this whole gothic sinister like thing going on which i love.

Fearghal's collection featured Boys with tattoos wrapped in S&M like leather harnesses and laden with cow skull helmets with protruding hair. It was entirely cut from womenswear blocks, making the the collection slick tight and fitted and evident when it came to his Latex shorts and trousers. Spray painted print on latex through moth eaten masculin lace gave the collection its atmosphere. Triangular cut panels give garments unusual shape and structure, reminesent of architectural lines. the fluid composition of his translucent chiffon trousers give contrast to the harsh aggression of his collection a softer side. Fearghal's Mohair knitted jumper reminds me of Rawshack's inkblot tests, challenging the psychological state of a man.

Fearghal has received considerable interest and success after Graduate Fashion week. He is now in the process of working with Blow PR for representation, with talk of receiving funding for a new collection. His Graduate collection is also on sale at: notjustalabel.com

a short experimental film, shot in the wild of Ireland. Clothes by Damir Doma, taken from his mens Spring/Summer 2011. obviously reminiscent of the children's book and film 'where the wild things are' with reference to it's story, the temperature of its colour scale and complete silent shots except for the natural background sound. it has been beautifully created.

and so i've began an internship at Braille Menswear and im having so much fun. I first saw their styles when i interned with Crystal Deroche at the fashionisto magazine shoot where some of their pieces were modelled by korrel kennedy. I'd never seen any of their designs until then and they were by far my one of my favourite designers. I particularly loved their use of innovative materials and especially the wax cotton capes.

my first day on wednesday was pretty easy going. The boys have been alternately working abroad and therefore made it hard knowing what each had completed. Though i was put to work sourcing perferated leather from leather merchants for a cropped biker jacket that was to be made.

Saturday was fun. I volunteered to help Sam set up a display for Braille SS11 festival colt in the window of 123 store of 123bethnalgreenroad. this consisted of A cream wax cotton, linen lined poncho was hung from a wooden tipipee and showered in a plastic rain display i had made the previous day. Whilst a white linen suit, also hung by a tipiee was draped in yellow ribbon, representing sunshine.

well anyway before i bore you with my ramblings id just like to tell you how great Braille is. The lads ben and sam are such lovely guys and so down to earth which is refreshing when it comes to fashion.

Westminster graduate fashion show 2011

so its been a whirl wind experience, interning with our fabulous final year graduates. The westminster show kicked off graduate fashion week on 26 may where around 700 of the fashion industry joined us at the underground venue P3, located within the university of westminster at marylebone. The show was an epic success although a little chaotic, what with last minute runs across london picking up steel rulers to fix wooden structured garments.

As first years we were allocated the job of dressing. Not easy i might tell you, what with quick changes, blowing up plastic animal rubber-ring like dresses and arranging models seconds before walking on show. I however was lucky enough to land myself a position on front of house and therefore had the opportunity to watch the show that we had be working so hard on for the previous month.

Fashionisto Magazine photoshoot

So i today i was Crystal Deroche's assistant on The Fashionisto menswear photoshoot. The setup was focused on the model Korrel Kennedy and is to be featured in the launch issue of The Fashionisto's printed magazine. The photographer was Juan Trujillo who was so good, he was amazing at directing the model and knew exactly what he wanted when it came down to it.

The model Korrel Kennedy who i had previously seen walk at the Christopher Shannon show turned up late which meant for a bad start to the morning but the clothes looked oh so good on his tiny model frame and he had some good looks.

The chosen garments from asos were meant to delivered to the studio in Archway but didn't arrive until 3 which meant i had to dash into central to Bryan Morel and Surgery PR Agents to pick up some clothes to shoot. The PR agencies were great, having only been asked for the garments that day they were ready and waiting and ever so helpful.

Braille, a menswear label which had yet to enter my life made a spectacular appearance today. Some of their clothes were featured in the shoot and they were by far my favourite. They were more statement pieces, standing out amongst which was by now a mass of styling material. I particularly loved their use of innovative materials of silk and cotton wax fabrics's and especially the wax cotton capes and coats.

Though i am now utterly exhausted so i am going to crash. I had such a great day working with some fabulous people which i would like to thank, especially Crystal Deroche who has been so amazing, giving me all the help she possibly can.

so i met this lad, yes again at the menswear day of fashion week who worked for junky styling and he convinced me of their ways. the girls Annika Sanders and Kerry Seager create some mixed up versions of classic tailoring all from recycled clothing, in which they describe as a procedure of‘Wardrobe Surgery’ and so eco-friendly which always wins points with me.

i hear you sigh... just another label trying their hand at making patched up and repaired hand me downs into designer clothing but junky styling pulls it off with ease.

And so i emailed them, expecting no reply as ever is the case with most designers but was pleasantly surprised when they quickly responded with such a lovely email that i would like to commend them.

I'm a little obsessed but then again i love this boys look and i know you guys can't get enough of him either, so i'm going to go on ahead and keep on posting.

This time it's through Agi&Sam. I saw these guys collection in the exhibition space on the menswear day of Fashion week and it was totally mind blowing. People are seriously excited about Agi&Sam Their collection can be viewed through 3D glasses and their bespoke print just jumps out at you even more so than it does in reality. This obviously has gone down like a ton of bricks and the privileged at the designers exhibition just lapped it up.

Their collection is based on a mixture of influences from Jean-Michel Basquiat to The Fresh Prince of Belair. Such a combination.

Met at Somerset house, designers exhibition. He working was working with Nasir Mazhar. Such a cool lad, what with his long hair bulled up into a top knot , his quirky accessories and his preference of an all black attire. I'd like to think that he'd be the male version of me.

Naomi Campbell hosts Fashion for relief, a golden ticket event to raise money for The Princes Trust.

Pieces were donated by various designers and sold at the temporary pop-up-shop in Westfields shopping center. There was an event on tuesday where the store opened for private viewing to all those important fashion conscious beings. Unfortunately we hadn't organised ourself and applied for press passes so was unable to actually have a look around the shop but did manage some networking and general stalking of the various comers and goers.

Scouted the likes of Mr Hudson, Shingai Shoniwa from The Noisettes, Jodie Kidd an Hilary Alexander.

Plus we managed to devour Nandos after the event. We were ravenous after a long day with no time to eat. Welcome to Fashion. Thats all i'm going to say.

I visited the Kroller-Miller museum when in Amsterdam last year and saw the club mama gemutlich exhibition of Christiann Bastianns. Based on the use of obsolete equipment it featured thrown away cut-out images collaged with mixed media, giant sized coats hung from the ceiling, an odd film of a woman in a bathroom and a collection of garments fashioned, again from un-used and obsolete materials. Ever so haunting i thought it fit in beautifully with my current themes.

I've just come to the realisation that i have completely forgotten to blog about the Christopher Shannon show i saw at LFW. After my friend James Rachel managed to blag us a press pass it meant easy access to shows and especially when it came to menswear. There still seems to be limited hype when it comes to the boys which is a little disappointing, but then again great for me as i managed to sneak myself in with few obstacles.

Tell Tale is his sportswear etiquette, Christopher Shannon has shown an array of clean-cut males dressed in white paper cut-outs, adorned with customised Eastpack backpacks. Shannon's quirky use of embellishment works so well in epic contrast to sportswear. Anyway here's what it looked like:

I am in no way posting this video because i like the song but i'm finding the whole concept and performance art of the video inspiring. I can especially see myself using Rick Genest or 'Zombie boy' as a muse of mine. This boy is Nicola Formichetti's male muse. I first noticed him when he walked the Thierry Mulger menswear show this autumn / winter.

'Beakers bubble over, electricity crackles, a man hunches over a laboratory bench, a crazed look in his eyes. Pale skinned, sleep-deprived the man toiling away in a lab full of strange machinery, delving into natures most forbidden and dreadful secrets. Prepare yourself for zombie Kittens, two-headed dogs and other lab-spawned monstrosities'

Frankenstein bolts and stitched mouthes. Masks of deformed rabbits looking like they walked off the set of Donnie Darko.

The collection was inspired by the book 'Elephants on acid and other bizarre experiments' by Alex Boese. Bold, acidic and slimy greens and colours adorned on monochrome bikers jackets. Customised nike trainers and heels. I especially enjoyed the spider cutouts and latex plastic jackets.

'Sibling takes a knitted pub-crawl around east London.'

Sid Bryan, Joe Bates & Cozette McCreedy.

Comprised of Joe Bates, Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery they combine a childlike and whimsical use of knitwear for men but still maintain a certain masculinity.

They were all pretty busy so i was unable to speak to them for long but them seem really genuine people. The room was buzzing with people which was just testament to their success.

The collection was embellished with lion heads, panda faces and embroidered tattoo's and set around an east-end pub-crawl, mainly gun-metal greys and blood reds.

And when it comes down it it panda's are very cool.

The Panda masks had to be my favourite piece.

Hats seem to be the statement this season.

Unable to post the film showed at the presentation as of yet.

Will be undated when the film is released.

I met Ada at the Designers exhibition at Somerset house. Now this girl was so lovely, just really down to earth. Such a breathe of fresh air when it comes to fashion. She spoke of her obsessions with triangles and structural shoulders and the way she conjures stories from her mind in which she bases her collection on. This is the tale behind her current collection:

“Under the frozen surface of Jupiter's moon Europa, has evolved a new species: The Cryoflux. Descending onto earth she arrives in the barren darkness of the Antarctic winter, to explore a frozen world in an unfamiliar state of flux. Clothed in powerfully sculptured attire, encompassing vibrant flames and ice shattering prints, she reflects her surroundings. She voyages through the tenacious climate which is constantly cracking and reforming around her.”

Some really beautiful icelandic pieces. Her concepts are really intriguing. I especially love the contrast of fluid chiffon with the structural triangular forms. Ada's also really interested in ethical and sustainable fashion which won points with me.

I was a dresser slash general run-about intern for Jacob Kimmie today. Such a great time. His collection was based on what he summed up as "bombers" but looked into gothic sacred themes and was inspired by Pieter Hugos' "Hyena Men".

Here are some backstage photographs:

Lad in heels. Might i mention this was his first experience with runway and he'd be thrown in at the deep end with heels. He totally worked it though, especially after he left with his make-up still on. Great lad.

Uma Burke exhibited today at Freemasons Hall, Vauxhall Fashion Scout. Showing an experimental fashion film.

Speaking to Uma whilst setting up her exhibition i realised just how beautifully down to earth she was. Dressed in a bohemian floaty dress and her face adorned with warpaint she was an intriguing character. When asked about this inspiration behind it she replied:

Uma: It was inspired by Frankenstein and how he starts as a child and learns how to move faster and faster and becomes stronger and stronger. I wanted it to confuse people and make them feel uncomfortable. The model was so ill but really amazing. We had the criticism last season of the model not being able to act and told we should have used an actor. But then she wouldn't have had the right look. We covered the poor girl in liquid latex and had to keep peeling it off throughout the day. Being filmed in a basement it was so cold, her agency wasn't happy to say the least.

So i should start by explaining that i'm interning at Vauxhall Fashion Scout for fashion week and so i've been extremely busy.

Friday i was booked to work at the 10th annual party at freemasons hall for Vauxhall but when i rolled in they sent me straight to Somerset house to work backstage at Aminaka Wilmont.

I dressed Maddy Foord who worked for storm models. Lovely girl and it was only her first season.

Models wore yellow contacts with yellow and black cracked Barry M nail varnish inspired by totemic tribes, primitivism and subtraction. Heavily featured were feather/fur shawls, leathers and strapping, spiral eye printed dresses, scarab pendants, bird ring's and ear cuffs.

As fashions students trailing their way around Saville Row in the name of research you don't have high expectations when it comes to badgering the respected Saville Row tailors but oh i was wrong. The general attitude of the smaller companies was exceptional. They were so eager to help it was uncanny. This here was Graham Lawless from Davies & Son. This man was wonderful. He spent a fare time explaining the age old process of tailoring, pulling out patterns, fabric swatches and half constructed garments to explain. I couldn't thank him enough.

So i was thinking that we in the fashion industry are always so far ahead when it comes to next seasons trends, ideals and concepts that you often forget to look at the present and to look at whats happening now. Lets take a look at this seasons menswear trends:

Spring/Summer for 2011 menswear has brought an explosion of animal prints and acid crayola colours to our attention. This paired with burnt orangey-browns, navy blues and greys creates a blur of a vivid colour palette. Minimalism has meant for a chance to start afresh, toned down simple tailoring is modified with extreme embellishment, adding detail and a certain complexity to “clean slate” simplicity. Its clearly obvious that the studded biker jacket and the sheer transparency of many designers shirts are evidence enough that you will be sure to see these as staple items this season.

For his menswear SS11 collection, rusty browns and burnt orange hues are paired with not just traditional floral print, but graphic image and lace motifs where JW Anderson shows his ability to combine totally contrasting design with maximum effect. The way these colours are blended and composed, balanced with charcoal grey trousers, sandy brown sweaters and embellished with golden broaches is both witty and youthful. Embellishment is used by so many designers this summer, in the way of golden broaches, chained belts and to customise toecaps with exaggerated jewels and spikes. Subtle references to sheer transparent shirts and layered t-shirts are again a key subject of this summer’s staple trend with the likes of Acne to Topshop Unique using chiffons to make their garment’s lingerie revealing. Anderson has decided against the minimal look that so many are re-visiting and instead embellished and complicated, his garments adding zips, spaghetti straps and various textures. The added attention to outer seaming and rolled up hems that have cropped up a few times, in both menswear and women’s wear are sure to be a style fundamental.

Bernhard Willhelm, quirky and original, supplies us with constant humour and flow of imagery in various different forms from acid coloured warnings to chest pieces emblazoned with men. His light-hearted whimsical ensembles are his perception of menswear, is brave and cutting edge, which laugh’s in the face of our ever so plastic lifestyle. Rejecting the conventional runway, Willhelm instead streamed live a video from Paris’s Gardens of tranoi. Models were showcased in what looked like some surreal fashion assault course, wading their way though mountains of foam and engulfed in coloured dust bombs. Uncontrollable clashing print, acid-neon colours thrown in and jumbled up achieved such an explosive technicolor vision, fundamental to his design. Underwear as outerwear, citation to Arab headwear as well as homemade gas masks rendered with blood red florals shows just how Willhelm captures the moment.

Tumbling and staggering their way down the catwalk looking like a roughed up Parisian Charlie Chaplin was Galliano’s menswear collection. Never boring or dull are his ensemble of male marching models, what with the occasional theatrics and female model thrown in just for good measure. Mixed greys and sandy browns, a whole lot of monotone, creams and navy blues made up the basis of Galliano’s colour palette and show off his ability to pull together a whole range of differing ideas into one collection. There was little reference to current trends like that of his women’s wear collection where he showed an obsession with anything sheer, snakeskin coats and an acid colour palette. Ranging from sharp tailoring, cut up with waist tied belts, dropped crotch trousers to Galliano’s signature I-hide-nothing lingerie pieces towards the end. Galliano explained ‘It’s a bit like being in a gentlemen’s club where you wear very conservative clothes, but on the back of a tie there hides a pin-up image.’ 1 which I think sums up his menswear to the point, its traditional in a way but then again its adapted, altered and made oh so unconventional in a way that only john Galliano could achieve.

Rocking out the rough and ready biker jacket, white string vests and ancestral cut is Burberry Prorsum SS11 Menswear collection, which is effortlessly cool. Like the women’s wear collection this season the biker jacket just keeps on reappearing, layered with traditional tailoring, paired with white string vests is bearing all this summer. Nothing but elaborately studded, quilted leather all in traditional browns and khaki greens, mustard burnt yellows come sandy browns and greys run adjacent to the acid colour palette of designers such as McQueen or Donatella Versace, who were creating as early as last year with clashing print. In contrast to Christopher bailey’s SS10 which stuck to black and white tones with a dash of colour but the military influence is again evident, a signature of Burberry, but instead is blown up to overly large Macs and long camel overcoats. Remaining constant, their classic design can be seen again with quilted jackets, lightweight Macs and the immortal trench but with a modern twist, added belts, pockets, spaghetti straps and oversized bags.

Tell Tale is his sportswear etiquette, Christopher Shannon has shown an array of snow white icemen wandering down the runway clad in rain hats, timberland boots, tropical-come pastoral shaded rucksacks and neck bags. Somewhat reminiscent of holidays that he never actually got to go on, the theme is something of a trip to the seaside. Clean-cut males dressed in white paper cut-outs and netted shorts with multiple pockets are again reference to sheer or being able to see through to the body behind. The toned down simple sportswear is modified with extreme embellishment with tassels, beads, ribbons and spaghetti strapping much like that of J W Anderson is both witty and youthful. His signature technical sportswear is easily wearable with simple square-cut t-shirts revealing inserts of netting and interlocking block colouring shirts in sherbet lemons and dusty blues and creams. The entire collection is minimalistic without being overly cold, gilded with the most complex of accessories. Reference to military wear can be seen in conventional cameo-prints inlaid with text and type giving the traditional its own little twist.

Not exactly a win but still worthwhile. Took a trip on a whim to Harrow & Wealdstone to find a derelict pub. We found two. One we shimmed our way under a fence for but were disappointed to find it was throughly boarded up and also situated neighbouring a police station.

There was however a need to photograph my garment for the current black project's deadline tomorrow. So here goes (don't judge).

I stumbled upon this little exhibition space on Regent street, ust off Carnaby street and around the corner from the Lomography shop.Developing my first lomo-film. Exciting.

Beautiful shabby little room with peeling paint on wooden walls. The Photographs themselves were presented well, being hung from bulldog clips screwed to the wall. It fit in well with the idea of a working development.

Attended a talk by Wessie Ling, senior lecturer at LCF, on Chinese fashion and identity. Looking at the modernisation of the Qipao (traditional chinese dress). I was particularly interested in the way the chinese women defied gender inequality when they started to wear a masculine Qipao, which had such a resemblance to menswear it was considered as cross-dressing.

Inspired by a skip. I went on a rampage yesterday looking for some kind of dirty and preferably mouldy wooden crate in which i could present my samples. Now this was a good skip, found at the back of a fine art department at the university of westminster. Some Interesting finds. I didn't find a crate in the end but managed to fashion a terribly crude box from some rotten charred wood. Banging nails in with a rolling pin the night before a deadline. Beautiful.

Hugely inspired by this. attempt at knitting some really bad, spider-web like chaining. Now i'm obsessing over knit. Im thinking this will feed into the print project well.

Brick Lane, VINTAGE RUN. Such a good day, ended up with 3 garments for £25. Score. The street Art in this area is so inspiring. The work of Jef Aerosol kept cropping up. He's a french street artist who started stencilling in france back in 1982. Beautifully detailed and complexed stencils of characters are his signature and have been seen from London to Chicago.

I have a fascination with Straight jackets yes. I think it would be good to build up a collection of garments and accessories to use for styling. This would make for a good start. That and some ideas for a gas mask. I like the idea of insanity.

Oh so excited about this. I've been pondering the whole latin phrase 'Momento Mori' concept for my next tattoo and this would entwine with that concept so beautifully.

Harris Tweed Nike Air, i so badly need a pair of these in my collection. The story behind tweed in itself is awe-inspiring but collaborating with nike is so unexpected considering its heritage. I haven't bought a pair of nike's in a long time and i reckon its about time i do so.

This is what i made for my FMP on Foundation. I've just pulled it out from under my bed and thought it such a waste. That's when i had this epic idea to use it as a rug since i've so desperately been looking for something interesting to fill my floor space. i love it when a plan comes together like this.

Matthew Miller SS11, Form = Function, explores the concept of the man and his masculinity.

So i stumbled across this blog flashespast.blogspot.com. This guy's doing a masters at LCF in Menswear and his blog is pretty sweet. well anyway this is the first i've seen of this collection and i love it. It portrays masculinity without being overly aggressive. He uses traditional tailoring but in a modern way. It would have made for some good research material when i was involved in the shirt project.

So i really loved the woollen plaid shirt he was wearing this day. Charity shop of course. He's the cutest. We had a whole conversation about how garment's aren't made how they used to be and the glory of our local charity shops.

It was a beautiful moment.
